Matthew Bialecki’s Breen Residence Receives AIA Honor Award
Bialecki Architects is pleased to announce the receipt of its seventh American Institute of Architect’s Award. The Breen Residence in Woodstock received an Honor Award for Architectural Excellence from the Westchester Mid-Hudson AIA at the 2009 Celebration of Architects gala on November 14th, 2009, at the Arts Exchange, the home of ArtsWestchester, in While Plains.
The Breen residence is designed as a state of the art “green,” zero net energy house that demonstrates the three critical aspects of sustainable buildings: a high performance “building envelope” (floors/walls/roof); high-efficiency building systems (geothermal); and active and passive solar energy systems (PV panels and sustainable building design). It is constructed primarily of recycled and sustainable materials and features many important sustainable components, including high-performance triple glazed windows, super-insulating spray foam, “rainscreen” vented walls and an “Umbrella Roof.” The Umbrella Roof is a double-layered, fully vented radiant barrier system for passive cooling and healthy air quality designed and trademarked by Bialecki Architects. High-efficiency building systems include a geothermal heating and cooling system powered by a 4.5 kw photovoltaic solar array with a radiant floor heating system. Whole house fans vent warm air out of the building. Passive systems include a central stair thermo-siphon, while the overall form of the building heightens natural ventilation.
The Breen Residence award joins the other AIA awards received by Matthew Bialecki, AIA, for his sustainable houses and buildings:
